The Cathy Freeman Foundation invites your school to participate in our Stride for Education virtual challenge this November.
WHAT IS STRIDE FOR EDUCATION?
Stride for Education is designed to get students across Australia active, all while learning about the important work the Cathy Freeman Foundation does with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in remote communities.
The aim of Stride for Education is to be as active as you can throughout the month of November. You can do this in whichever way you wish, whether that be running, walking, or wheeling for those in wheelchairs.
Every kilometre clocked counts, and is a stride closer to supporting kids to realise their goals through our education programs.
Registration is free. Schools can register into their pre-existing classes or can make up their own groups, with a minimum of 25 students and a maximum of 27 students per group.
Participants will have the option to choose from five daily distance challenges named after our four partner communities and Melbourne office:
CFF HEAD OFFICE CHALLENGE:
1km daily - approximately the distance from the Melbourne office to the MCG and back (roughly 1,250 steps)
WOORABINDA CHALLENGE:
2km daily - approximately the distance from one end of Woorabinda to the other (roughly 2,500 steps)
WURRUMINYANGA CHALLENGE:
5km daily - approximately the distance around Wurrumiyanga (roughly 6,500 steps)
GALIWIN'KU CHALLENGE:
7km daily - approximately the distance around Galiwin’ku (roughly 9,000 steps)
PALM ISLAND CHALLENGE:
10km daily - approximately the distance from one end of Palm Island to the other (roughly 13,000 steps)
WHY YOUR SCHOOL SHOULD GET INVOLVED
Stride for Education encourages physical activity, provides students with an insight into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, and underlines the importance of working as part of a team to achieve a common goal.
Every student who participates will receive an electronic certificate signed by Cathy Freeman.
As a special reward, the class or group that covers the most kilometres will win a unique Cathy Freeman Foundation school engagement experience of up to one hour, which includes a visit by a CFF staff member to the school to conduct activities and facilitate a live online Q&A session with Cathy Freeman.
Schools who register for the event by Friday, October 15 will also go into draw to win a set of Indigenous education books valued at $750. Each class or group registered equals one entry, so the more teams you register, the more chances you have to win.
The focus of this event is on participation and raising awareness of our work. Fundraising is optional, but for schools who do wish to engage in fundraising, there will be a fundraising prize for the class who raises the most money, an interactive Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural experience at your school, courtesy of Wanyara. The Wanyara TAG (Traditional Aboriginal Games) uses sport and games to tell the story of specific Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural practices and history.
